What is Adapted Physical Education (A.P.E.)?

A.P.E. is a program of developmental activities, games, and sports designed for students with disabilities.  Mental, social, and physical skills are needed to learn the rules and strategies of games, sports, and lifetime leisure skills.

Who Receives Adapted Physical Education?

Adapted Physical Education is provided for preschool children with disabilities, ages 3-5, who are experiencing developmental delays in physical, cognitive, communication, adaptive, social, or emotional development.  Children who are typical role models also participate in the adapted physical education class and provide examples of typical gross motor skills and appropriate behavior, e.g., paying attention, turn taking, following directions.
